  • For caramel: 9 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  4. In another bowl, beat together granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cooled brown butter until fluffy.
  5. Add eggs one at a time followed by vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually mix dry ingredients with buttermilk until just combined.
  7. Divide batter between pans and bake for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. For caramel filling: Melt butter, stir in brown sugar and heavy cream, cook until thickened.
  9. Assemble cake by layering caramel filling between cooled cake layers; frost with cream cheese frosting.
