Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round loaf of crusty bread (sourdough recommended)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1 cup shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, chives, salt, and pepper until combined.
  3. Make diagonal cuts across the top of the bread about 1 inch apart; then make another set of diagonal cuts to create a crosshatch pattern without cutting all the way through.
  4. Spread the garlic butter mixture into each cut thoroughly.
  5. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheese between cuts.
  6. Wrap the loaf in aluminum foil with the top slightly open and bake for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let cool briefly before serving warm.
